Rockie Fresh Takes The Wheel With Latest Release From Rick Ross’ MMG
The set is chock full of grooves, but one song stands above others in Fresh’s mind. He sees the collaborative effort of “Life Long,” which features Rick Ross and Nipsey Hussle, as the song that hits home. [See video below]
“[It's] just coming from a place where so many people are dying young,” he told Radio.com, “Even in the music, we are being promoted to die young. When I look at Ross, who is much older, [seeing] the things he achieved, if he stopped he probably wouldn’t have seen things he’s seen. Same with Nipsey. Even myself, I thought about quitting. If I would have stopped I never would have had a deal.”
Despite the Rick Ross love, Fresh’s first big co-sign didn’t come from the rap world but through his relationship with Patrick Stump of Fall Out Boy, with whom he toured. Joel & Benji Madden of Good Charlotte also took an early interest in his career.
While he’s a member of one of today’s premier hip-hop crews, Fresh is able to shift gears between musical styles.
“As far as my lane in Maybach music, I really just see it as music and I think everybody sees that across the board,” he said. “People will see it that way, too. The more records we released together, people just gotta give it time and everything will start to make more sense.”
With the wide range of musical influences, Fresh said he is determined to avoid musical boundaries.
“At the same time I never want to be boxed in,” he said. “I want to be able to touch all kinds of music even beyond rap. If I want to go in on a trap record it doesn’t mean I’m selling out. Just as much as Meek [Mill] rapping on a ‘Rockie sound’ doesn’t make him a sellout. It’s just different emotion added to it.”
