An SNL spoof breathes new life into the term YOLO. Kendrick Lamar and Adam Levine joined Andy Samberg’s Lonely Island crew to revive the word that had been pronounced dead by internet trolls.

The comedic rap crew flipped the term YOLO (You Only Live Once), which was popularized in 2011 after Drake promoted it on “The Motto”:  ”You only live once, that’s the motto…YOLO,” he rapped. 

Last year, YOLO made the shortlist for OxfordDictionaries USA’s “Word of the Year” but was bested by GIF (Graphic Interchange Format). According to Oxford Dictionaries USA, YOLO is “typically used as rationale or endorsement for impulsive or irresponsible behavior.”

The Lonely Island turned the motto on its head, transforming it into a rallying call for more conservative behavior. If you only live once, Samberg and crew explain in their version of “YOLO,” one should be the opposite of whimsical and careless. [See video below]

“Cook the meat ’til it’s done,” Levine sings, “’cause you only live once…”

The troupe caution listeners against everything from going to loud clubs (“bad for your ears”), to the dangers of kids (“their hair is filled with mad lice”) and saunas (their “filled with piranhas”).

Kendrick tops off the advice with a tedious rap about building a conservative investment portfolio, which includes “4.2 percent” real estate investments and a “30 year mortgage.”

The Lonely Island is a comedy crew comprised of SNL writers Akiva Schaffer, Jorma Taccone and Samberg. Their music videos have become a popular SNL feature with the participation of major artists such as Justin Timberlake, Norah Jones, T-Pain, Rihanna and others.  –Erik Parker, CBS Local
